At the heart of these institutions lies the prominent Groupe des Ecoles des Mines (GEM), a unique network of 7 schools strategically located throughout France.
GEM offers students of all nationalities an excellent opportunity to study for a Master of Science in engineering degree in France.
The Group of Ecoles des Mines (GEM), a yardstick among the elite Grandes Ecoles in France The Groupe des Ecole des Mines is a network of schools producing high-level engineers. Unlike most engineering training institutions, the Ecoles des Mines are under the direct administration of the Ministry of Industry. The first Ecole des Mines was founded by Louis XVI in 1783 to meet the needs of the mines at a time when safety and mining technology left much to be desired. With the changes in industry over the years, the role of the Ecole des Mines has evolved. No longer do they train mining specialists, but engineers capable of participating in the development of all aspects of modern day industry.
The group is comprised of seven institutions located throughout France (Albi, Alès, Douai, Nancy, Nantes, Paris and Saint-Etienne):
Teaching of a very high standard provided by many contributors from the world of industry, together with some 1,000 permanent research academics who develop their skills by conducting research work with industry, leading in practical terms to some 200 theses and 2,000 publications annually. All students are required to spend several months in company internships.
The Group of Ecoles des Mines (GEM) offers its experience acquired over more than a century in knowing how to anticipate and accompany ongoing developments in the economic field. With about 2000 graduates per year, Ecole des Mines engineers are to be found in all sectors of industry as well as in business, services and public administrations.
